Access to Recreation at Bedford Public Schools: Enhancing Play with Musical Equipment
We are thrilled to share the continued success of the Access to Recreation initiative at Bedford Public Schools, where new opportunities for sensory play have been introduced at Jackman Road Elementary. This project, made possible through a generous grant, has added three musical play elements to the school’s playground: a chime, a xylophone, and a drum. These sensory-rich, ground-level pieces are designed for children aged 2-12, ensuring accessibility for all.
The new musical equipment was installed on a newly paved blacktop arc, providing a stable surface for easy navigation. The area surrounds an existing bench, creating a perfect “audience” seating space for added fun. To further enhance the interactive experience, the blacktop has been painted with a music staff and notes, turning the space into a lively, engaging play zone.
These auditory elements are more than just fun; they help children develop essential sensory skills by differentiating sound stimuli, which plays a key role in their overall development. Kim Ortiz, Assistant Principal at Jackman Road Elementary, shared her enthusiasm: “It’s used at every grade level during recess by all students. Watching them ‘make music’ together and seeing the joy and inclusivity is truly heartwarming. I want to personally thank you for the grant—it’s a wonderful addition to our school.”
We are excited to see the continued positive impact of these new sensory play features, and we look forward to watching the students of Jackman Road Elementary continue to explore and enjoy them for years to come.
