Youth Arts Camp: Fostering Creativity and Literacy in Local Youth

We are excited to share the success of the Monroe County Opportunity Program (MCOP) and their vibrant Youth Arts Camp at The Opportunity Center @ ALCC, made possible by a generous grant from the Kellogg Youth Fund. This dynamic camp featured two creative sessions: Art with Amy and Young Author’s Camp, both designed to inspire creativity and encourage literacy among local youth.

Led by local artist Amy Arnold, the Art Camp offered participants the chance to explore their artistic talents through activities like tie-dyeing and painting. In the Young Author’s Camp, students engaged with African-American authors, who shared their stories and guided participants through creative writing exercises. To enhance the experience, each camper received signed copies of the authors’ books, helping to expand their personal libraries and foster a love of reading.

The impact of the camp was evident, as both sessions quickly filled to capacity and received high ratings from participants. Thanks to the support of the Kellogg Youth Fund, the camp provided a meaningful summer experience that nurtured creativity, literacy, and a passion for the arts in local youth.
