Symons Elementary: Enriching Minds Through Fine Arts

The 2023-2024 school year was a memorable one for the Fine Arts Program at Symons Elementary, thanks to a generous grant from the GMACF’s Milan Area Enrichment Fund. This funding made it possible for every student to experience live performances, enriching their educational experience and expanding their cultural horizons.

Fifth graders enjoyed a performance of The Lightning Thief at the Valentine Theater, fourth graders attended a lively show by Buckets and Boards at the Peristyle Theater, and third graders were captivated by The Boy Who Cried Wolf at the Valentine Theater. These live performances sparked creativity and imagination, offering students valuable experiences that went beyond the classroom setting.

In addition to the field trips, Symons Elementary hosted several Fine Arts assemblies and events that left a lasting impression on students. Professor WOW captivated students with exciting science experiments, while musician Joe Reilly used music to promote kindness and environmental stewardship. Later in the year, Dumpster Doug led an engaging assembly on recycling, and children’s author Maria Dismondy gave an inspiring presentation that combined storytelling with social-emotional learning.

These programs have fostered a deep appreciation for the arts and have made a significant impact on students’ creativity, compassion, and connection with the world around them. One student perfectly captured the essence of the program, sharing, “Be kind and don’t be mean and love the world!” This sentiment reflects the enduring value of the arts in shaping well-rounded, empathetic individuals.
