Empowering Healthy Seniors: Monroe Center for Healthy Aging’s Successful Programs
We are excited to share the ongoing success of the Monroe Center for Healthy Aging’s impactful A Matter of Balance and Know Your Four Numbers programs, supported by a grant from the Monroe Health Endowment Fund. These initiatives are helping seniors live more fulfilling and independent lives by promoting health, wellness, and vital awareness of balance and key health metrics.
The “A Matter of Balance” program, developed by Boston University and Maine Health’s Partnership for Healthy Aging, tackles the fear of falling by combining education and exercise. Thanks to the support of local grant funding, Master Trainers have been trained, enabling them to mentor volunteer coaches who lead sessions across multiple locations throughout Monroe County. Participants report increased confidence in their balance, and the program has had a lasting, positive impact on participants’ well-being.
Additionally, the Know Your Four Numbers health initiative raises awareness about critical health metrics through Health Fairs that engage community members. Many participants have reported improvements in their blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, contributing to better health overall.
The program continues to expand to more locations, allowing individuals to understand their “four numbers”—blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and BMI (calculated from height and weight). The addition of a Cholestech LDX System enables registered nurses to perform on-site cholesterol checks at health fairs, alongside blood pressure and blood sugar screenings.
With hundreds of individuals positively impacted by these efforts, we are incredibly proud of the Monroe Center for Healthy Aging’s ongoing dedication to improving the health and lives of Monroe County seniors. We look forward to continuing this impactful partnership!
