Welcome to the Community Foundation

Dear Friends:

Our premier edition of "Good News," CFMC's newsletter.

Let’s talk about the community foundation movement in American 100 years ago.  The Community Foundation concept was born in the Midwest, giving rise to a new philanthropy, a new way to participate in community and a new vision for the future.

Today, the Community Foundation of Monroe County is one of more than 700 community foundations across the United States that invite everyday people with a vision and a passion for community to create something together: “For Good, Forever, For Everyone”.

This year, the Community Foundation of Monroe County celebrates its 38th anniversary of donors and volunteers whose generosity continues to make life better in the Monroe area.

Community foundations are designed to build endowment funds that benefit the community forever and help create personal legacies.  When you contribute to the endowment managed by the Community Foundation of Monroe County, your gift is invested over time.  Earnings from your fund are used to make grants addressing community needs.  Your gift-and all future earnings from your gift- is a permanent source of community capital, helping to do good work today and in the future.

This year, the Community Foundation of Monroe County awarded grants and scholarships for $221,000.  We have assets of more than $6 million.  We are proud of our accomplishments.  Navigating change is always a challenge, but it also is exciting to see results of hard work and perseverance .  Over the past year we have been instrumental in:

  • providing enhancements to some of our county recreation facilities through our Access to Recreation Endowment,
  • advocating for women and children through our GROW (Giving Represents our Women) Endowment,  awarding several thousand dollars to local non-profits.
  • provided books to over 1,200 children monthly through our Imagination Library program,
  • introduced Michigan College Access Network to our county schools,
  • awarding over  $80,000 in scholarships to school children in our county
  • hosting our signature event , “Rollin on the River”.

We meet the nation’s highest philanthropic standards for operational quality, integrity and accountability.  The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations program requires community foundations to document our policies for donor services, investing, grant making and administration.

We want to continue to inspire individuals, families, organizations and businesses to create permanent charitable funds that help our community meet the challenges of changing times.  Our commitment to the community is to continue to provide increased dedication and impact for ongoing improvement and involvement in our wonderful Monroe County.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Staff of the Community Foundation of Monroe County thank you for your continued support.  We encourage you to consider accomplishing your charitable goals by working with us.  We are here to support you in your philanthropic efforts.
